58.3% pure · 14/24 · hallmarked 58514K is 58.3% gold, stamped 585 — a little over half the metal by weight. It is the workhorse karat of the United States and much of Eastern Europe, chosen for exactly the reason the Gulf tends to avoid it: hard, cheap to make in volume, and very difficult to damage.
Everyday wedding bands, men's rings and chains meant to be worn and forgotten are commonly 14K, because a piece that spends its life against a keyboard or a steering wheel survives better at 585 than at 875. The colour is paler, and next to a 21K piece the difference is visible.
As a store of value it is the weakest of the five: more than 40% of what you carry is not gold, and shops that buy gold back in gold-standard markets often quote poorly for it or decline it, because the local trade is not set up to melt and re-refine it.
The dominant retail karat in Taiwan is 24K, so 14K is usually a deliberate choice here — bought for what it does better, not because it is what the shop happened to have.

Taiwan gold market
Taiwan's retail gold market centres on 24K gold (99.9% pure), quoted locally per gram in TWD. As a free-floating currency, the TWD means prices also reflect daily TWD/USD exchange-rate moves. Taiwan favours 99.99 pure gold, traditionally traded by the tael, and the Bank of Taiwan offers gold passbook accounts and bars.
Common questions about 14K gold in Taiwan
- How is the 14K gold price in Taiwan calculated?
- The 14K per-gram price in Taiwan is computed as: spot ounce price (XAU/USD) ÷ 31.1035 g × purity ratio × TWD/USD FX rate. The spot price is sourced from Binance, Coinbase and Kraken via PAXG/USD, refreshed every second.
- Why does the gold price differ between shops in Taiwan?
- The raw spot price is the same across all shops. Differences come from three factors: (1) making charges (5-30 local units per gram), (2) retailer margin (3-10%), (3) local tax if applicable. The price shown here is the floor reference before any add-ons.
- How often is the Taiwan gold price updated?
